With the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in Brazil, Veronika Vynohradova, a representative of the School for Policy Analysis at NaUKMA and coordinator of the Networking Bridges: Ukraine and Latin America project, participated in the opening of two Ukrainian Bookshelves—at Santa Catarina State University (UDESC) in Florianópolis and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio).
The university libraries received books about Ukraine’s history, culture, and contemporary life, as well as works by Ukrainian writers and poets translated into Portuguese. Among them were books by Orest Subtelny, Andriy Kurkov, Maksym Kryvtsov, and Lyubko Deresh, as well as Train to Ukraine by Brazilian journalist Rodrigo Lopes.
During the events, Veronika Vynohradova presented projects implemented by the School for Policy Analysis at NaUKMA to foster dialogue between Ukraine and Latin American countries and shared the outcomes of the Networking Bridges initiative. Together with university representatives, the participants discussed opportunities for further cooperation between Ukrainian and Brazilian academic communities, including joint lectures and discussions, stronger research ties, student and faculty exchanges, and new educational projects.
The opening of the bookshelves thus became more than a cultural event: it also provided a space for building new professional connections and discussing concrete next steps in cooperation between universities in the two countries.
The Ukrainian Bookshelf is an initiative of the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Institute, and the Ukrainian Book Institute. The bookshelves in Brazil were opened with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine.
Every Ukrainian book added to a library abroad becomes a new bridge between societies. We thank UDESC, PUC-Rio, the Embassy of Ukraine in Brazil, and all the partners helping Ukrainian voices reach Brazilian readers. 💙💛
